Program of Resource Prospecting Engineering

The predecessor of the Resource Prospecting Engineering major at our school was the Petroleum Geology major established by Beijing Petroleum College in 1953. This major mainly studies the formation, evolution, and distribution patterns of oil and gas reservoirs. That is, through comprehensive geological, geophysical, and geochemical analyses, it aims to discover and prove oil and gas reservoirs, providing theoretical support for the rational and efficient development of oil and gas reservoirs.

Our Resource Prospecting Engineering program is accredited by the national engineering education program, included in the national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program," and recognized as a unique major by the Ministry of Education. The discipline of geological resources and geological engineering, which this major belongs to, has been included in the national first-class discipline construction, and the fourth round of national discipline evaluation resulted in an A+. In 2016, the campus's geological resources and geological engineering discipline was selected as a key discipline in the "13th Five-Year Plan" of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In 2020, the campus's Resource Prospecting Engineering major was approved as a first-class undergraduate major in Xinjiang. Currently, the Department of Geology has 37 professional teachers, all with doctoral degrees, including one Beijing teaching master and 27 high-level talents from the autonomous region and Karamay City.

The core courses of Resource Prospecting Engineering include General Geology, Rock-forming Minerals, Sedimentary Petrology, Structural Geology, Lithofacies Paleogeography, Petroleum Geology, Geophysical Logging, Geophysical Exploration, Petroleum Geology, and Oil and Gas Field Exploration Deployment.

The Resource Prospecting Engineering major at the Karamay campus has produced three graduates from 2020, 2021, and 2022, totaling 262 students. The employment rate is over 95%, and the main employers are large state-owned enterprises such as PetroChina, Sinopec, and CNOOC. The rate of graduate study and overseas study is 50.2%, and the main destinations for further study are renowned universities such as University of Science and Technology of China, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jilin University, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), Southern University of Science and Technology, and Northwest University.

Program of Exploration Technology and Engineering

The study (research) objects of the program of Exploration Technology and Engineering include (but are not limited to) the following: (1) various physical properties of underground rocks (density, resistivity, sound wave propagation speed, gravity, etc.); (2) the distribution and reserves of oil, natural gas, metal minerals, non-metal minerals, water resources, etc., underground; (3) geological disaster warning; (4) urban engineering exploration; (5) research and development of precision geophysical instruments; (6) geophysical big data theory and application.

Our school's major of Exploration Technology and Engineering is a national characteristic major with strong support in disciplines and talents, including "double first-class" disciplines, key disciplines of the autonomous region's "13th Five-Year Plan" (geological resources and geological engineering), national key (cultivation) disciplines (earth exploration and information technology), national key laboratories for oil and gas resources and exploration, and national-level major talents (such as Changjiang Scholars, 973 chief scientists, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, etc.).

The campus adheres to the construction concept of "high-level, applied, international, and cooperative" as well as the talent cultivation concept of "two uninterrupted four-year periods" (i.e., uninterrupted enterprise practical teaching for four years and uninterrupted enterprise participation for four years), creating professional advantages of "combining science and engineering, promoting science through engineering, and strengthening engineering through science" and an experimental platform with world-leading standards.

The core undergraduate courses for the major of Exploration Technology and Engineering include Python language, electromagnetic field theory, digital signal analysis and processing, nuclear physics fundamentals, elastic wave dynamics, principles of seismic exploration, geophysical logging methods, principles of gravity-magnetic-electric exploration, digital processing of seismic data, interpretation of seismic data, logging interpretation and digital processing, and gravity-magnetic-electric data processing and interpretation.

The major of Exploration Technology and Engineering at our campus is committed to cultivating "high-level, applied, and international" excellent engineers. Graduates of the exploration major have a wide range of employment opportunities and broad employment prospects. From 2019 to 2021, the average employment rate for graduates of the major of Exploration Technology and Engineering at our school's main campus was 97.69%. Among them, 44.22% of students chose direct employment, with employers including world top 500 companies such as PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC, and Sinochem, as well as land and resources departments, geological and mineral departments, and high-quality private enterprises; 53.47% of students chose to study abroad or continue their studies domestically, providing a large number of high-quality talents for well-known universities and research institutions in China. The major of Exploration Technology and Engineering at our campus will welcome its first batch of graduates in 2024.
