SPECIALITY
Program of Petroleum EngineeringThe discipline of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering originated from the "Drilling Engineering" and "Oil Production Engineering" majors established by Beijing Petroleum Institute in 1953. It started recruiting postgraduate students in 1961, obtained the authority to award doctorates in engineering in 1986, and established a postdoctoral research station for Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. In 2001, it was selected as a national key discipline and reconfirmed as a national key discipline in 2007. In 2017, this discipline was awarded A+ in the fourth national round of discipline evaluations and selected as a national "Double Top-Class" construction discipline. The Petroleum Engineering major at the campus has been approved as a key major (Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Major) in the autonomous region (in 2017) and a top-tier undergraduate major in the autonomous region (in 2020). The Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering discipline has been awarded as a key discipline of the "14th Five-Year Plan" in the autonomous region (in 2022). It has introduced 24 Ph.D. holders, relying on the western policy to introduce 2 Chang Jiang Scholars, 2 Chang Jiang Scholars' lecture professors, 1杰青, 1 recipient of the Autonomous Region's Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 Chinese Academy of Sciences Western Young Scholar, 1 talent from the Autonomous Region's "Tianchi Doctor" program, 1 high-level talent studio in Karamay, and 3 outstanding young talents from the university.Currently, the Petroleum Engineering Department at the campus has established a high-level teaching and research team composed of outstanding teachers from the main campus, backbone teachers at the campus, and well-known experts from enterprises. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering discipline has become a leading discipline in western China with distinctive characteristics, strong faculty, high-quality talent cultivation, and good social reputation. The Petroleum Engineering major combines theory with practice closely. Students majoring in Petroleum Engineering mainly study professional foundation courses in the first two years, such as Advanced Mathematics, College Physics, Theoretical Mechanics, Geology, and Fluid Mechanics. In the third year, they begin to study professional courses related to practice, including Oil Production Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, and Completion Engineering. In addition, students majoring in Petroleum Engineering also need to conduct practice and internship at oilfields. For postgraduate studies, students mostly go to "Double Top-Class" universities, research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other units, while employment is mainly oriented towards large state-owned enterprises such as CNPC, Sinopec, and CNOOC. Besides the oil industry, employment covers 41 fields, including the Internet, aviation, education, environmental protection, banking, insurance, securities investment, international trade, power, home appliances, clothing, logistics, automobiles, construction, machinery, and new energy. The employment rate of Petroleum Engineering majors in 2022 was above 95%, with 40.91% pursuing postgraduate studies or going abroad for further education.
