China University of Petroleum (Beijing), formerly known as Beijing Petroleum Institute, was founded in 1953 and is the first petroleum higher education institution in New China, laying the foundation for the exploration and development of China's petroleum higher education. On October 21, 2015, the Ministry of Education approved the construction of the Karamay campus of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), marking a new stage of development for the university in serving the major strategic needs of the country and regional economic development. China university of petroleum (Beijing) karamay campus is planned to cover a total area of 7200 mu（nearly 4,802,400 square meter）, with a total construction area of 645,000 square meters and a total investment of 4.3 billion yuan. The campus not only has petroleum engineering, geology, storage and transportation and other traditional advantages of petroleum university majors, but also will open information security, green energy, green chemical, logistics management and other expansion of new professional, and carry out for central Asia students education. At present, the teaching building, training workshop, student dormitory, student apartment, student restaurant, gymnasium and other facilities have been built. It is expected that after 5 to 8 years, the school will reach 8,000 full-time students.
