Overview

• The Faculty of Petroleum of CUPK is established on the basis of the College of Earth Sciences, the College of Geophysics and Information, the College of Petroleum Engineering and the College of Information Science and Engineering at the Beijing Campus.

  
  

• The Faculty of Petroleum has 5 First-Level Disciplines: Geology, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Geophysics, Oil and Gas Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, among which Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Oil and Gas Engineering has been selected as the China’s "Double First-Class" disciplines and the the autonomous region’s key disciplines, and Resource Exploration Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Software Engineering have been awarded the First-Class undergraduate majors in Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

  
  

• The Faculty of Petroleum has 2 Postdoctoral Mobile Station: Oil and Gas Engineering, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering; 10 Doctoral Programs, 13 Master's Programs, and 5 Bachelor's Programs. The Faculty of Petroleum also has a National Key Laboratory Branch of "Petroleum and Natural Gas Resources and Engineering" in Karamay, and the International Joint Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of Unconventional Petroleum and Gas Research Institute (Northwest Research Center) and other research platforms.

Facts and Staff

• The Faculty now has 113 formal employees. Among employed teachers in the college, 72(64%) hold doctorates. Meanwhile, there are 17 full-time teachers with senior titles and 29 associate senior titles. 
  
  

  The teaching staff includes: 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 national-level teaching master, 4 candidates selected for national major talent projects, 4 chief scientists of the national 973 program, 5 national candidates for the “National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, 1 recipient of government special allowance, 2 national outstanding teachers, 1 national-level young talent, 1 Beijing teaching master, 2 leading talents of the “Tianchi Talents” program in the autonomous region, 2 specially appointed professors in the autonomous region, 3 recipients of the autonomous region’s outstanding young scientist fund, 6 talents introduced under the “High-level Talents Introduction” program in the autonomous region, 9 talents of the “Tianshan Talents” program in the autonomous region, 1 “Tianshan Xue Song” national high-level reserve candidate, and 1 “outstanding young scientific and technological talent”in the autonomous region.  

  
  

  The Faculty has a total of 2,181 undergraduates and 184 graduate students.

• The Faculty of Petroleum adheres to the educational system of "deep integration of politics, industry, academic research, and continuous development over two four-year cycles". It invites experts from the academic and industrial circles to give lectures and sends students for internships to enterprises to cultivate "high-level, applied, and international" constructors in the West, who are capable of undertaking important tasks. The Faculty of Petroleum has won one national teaching achievement award and one special grand prize for teaching achievements in Beijing. Over 25% of the students have won provincial or higher-level awards in important discipline competitions such as the China International "Internet+" University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the China University Student Computer Design Competition, and the China Petroleum Engineering Design Competition. In the past three years, over 40% of graduates have entered "Double First-Class" universities such as Peking University, Beihang University, and China University of Petroleum (Beijing) for further studies. 

  
  

  More than 80% of the graduates who have signed employment contracts have joined state-owned enterprises such as CNPC, Sinopec, and CNOOC, and over 65% have chosen to work in the west. 

  
  

  The first group of graduates who chose to work in Xinjiang has received a reply from General Secretary Xi Jinping expressing his appreciation. The graduates who chose to work in Xinjiang have received care and good development from their employers, and their outstanding stories have been widely reported by the mainstream media.

• Relying on national and autonomous regional laboratories such as the National Key Laboratory of Petroleum and Natural Gas Resources and Engineering, the Faculty of Petroleum closely integrates with the development trends and technological frontiers of the oil and gas exploration and development industry to strengthen collaborative innovation in industry-academia-research-application. 

  
  

  In recent years, the Institute has undertaken one national major scientific research instrument development project, one international (regional) cooperation and exchange project, 20 National Natural Science Foundation projects, one major special project, and over 30 other provincial and ministerial projects. It has won one national teaching achievement award, one special grand prize for teaching achievements in Beijing, and three provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. The College has been granted 70 invention patents, published over 300 academic papers, and published 10 academic monographs.
